Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey
In 1959 Leakey, while at the British Museum of Natural History in London, received a visit from Ruth DeEtte Simpson, an archaeologist from California. Simpson had acquired what looked like ancient scrapers from a site in the Calico Hills and showed it to Leakey.
In 1963, Leakey obtained funds from the National Geographic Society and commenced archaeological excavations with Simpson..... more to follow.

"Dee" Simpson was an important woman archaeologist at a time when the field of archeology was still dominated by men. She was born in Los Angeles, California.
She received her Masters degree from the University of Southern California in 1944. She went on to be the curator of the Heard Museum in Arizona for two years. She was a curator at the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, California from 1946 to 1964. In 1964 she became the County Archeologist at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands, California.
Although she pursued many important archeological projects, mostly in the Mojave Desert in California, she spent much of her life working with Dr. Louis Leakey on the Calico Early Man Site in Yermo, California. She was a member of the American Anthropologist Association and the Society of American Archaeology.

Walter C. Schuiling was born in Minnesota in 1919 and died in Redlands, California in 2003 at age 84. He was associated with the Calico site from the beginning. He was also connected with the San Bernardino County Museum in a number of roles over a fifty year span.
